John and Gwen Lummen, along with Jude Kudera, opened the school on August, 1993. Mr. Lummen passed away on July 14, 2006 after a six month battle with cancer. His music school continues under the direction of Julie Prime and Jude Kudera. A tribute page to John Lummen is currently in the works.

The main objective of the John Lummen School of Music is to provide a friendly and happy place where children and adults alike can meet and learn more about music. Other objectives are to provide a variety of services and activities that are related to the learning and performance of music. These activities range from recitals, concerts and competitions to the learning of theoretical and history courses.

Our goal is to provide as high as possible quality of musical education. We believe that there should be more to music education than the regular weekly lessons. We offer on site recitals in our school, ensembles to supplement the private lessons, local and out of town concerts and competitions as well as field trips that will enhance musical education. Above all, we feel that a delicate balance exists between the proper discipline needed to learn combined with fun and enjoyment necessary to maintain a healthy interest and desire to return week after week for lessons.

What is a good age? The answer to this question will vary upon the individual, however, we have a curriculum designed to start students as young as four years old. For those who feel they might be too old to learn music, there are books and courses available now for any age and any style ranging from ragtime to jazz and blues to rock and roll. Classical music has also become increasingly popular with all ages as music schools such as the RCM have recently published books of increasing appeal and variety.
